Why am I running for school board? That question is one that is often asked. I could talk about a world class education. I could talk about class size, or school funding, or standardized testing. All these are truly important, and I feel we, as a district, need to address each one. But for me, it's about the children. It's about doing the right thing to protect them, to nurture them, to give them the tools and support they need to grow, to blossom, and to become everything they dream of becoming.
Northshore needs to be a place where all children feel safe and valued. Where parents are treated with respect, and are considered as partners in their child's educational experience. Where teachers and support staff are treated with dignity. A place that is more "family" than "institution." A place where our administrators and our school board directors listen and care.
I've been a part of the Northshore community for over 50 years. I grew up here, and chose to raise my family here. Both of my grandchildren attend Northshore schools. I have worked as a Paraeducator for Northshore. I ran a daycare here, and have had the joy of watching my children and my daycare kids grow up here in Northshore. I have worked as a classroom volunteer, and have served as a PTA leader, working on various committees.
I have stood up and spoken out in many ways and on many issues through the years. It hasn't always been easy, but it has always been worth it, regardless of the obstacles I have faced. And always, always, my driving purpose has been to do what is best for our children.
I am, and have always been, committed to this community and to all our children.

DISCLOSURE:
As many of you know, my husband is an employee in the Northshore School District, and has been for over 35 years. Although my husband is preparing for retirement in the months ahead, I wish to assure the community that while he remains employed with Northshore, I will work diligently to avoid any conflict of interest. If elected to the School Board, I will make a point of abstaining from any vote on his contract (NNRAP), and I will recuse myself from school board discussions regarding said contract. For me this is a very important issue: it is a moral obligation for me, as well as a legal obligation.
Guidance from the Washington State School Director's Association (WSSDA), as determined by Washington State laws, states:
"If a municipal officer has a permissible interest in a contract under one of the twelve exceptions, the officer may not vote on the authorization, approval or ratification of the contract. The officer’s interest in the contract must be disclosed to the school board and noted in the minutes of the board before the contract is made."
